Introduction to Ayurveda

Join us for an exploration to Ayurveda.  Ayurveda is a 5000-6000 year old science that is widely acknowledged to be the world's oldest existing health care system rooted in the ancient Vedic culture of India.

Ayurvedic medicine recognizes the uniqueness of every individual taking into account psychological, emotional and physical conditions and tendencies.  One size does not fit all!

In this "Introduction to Ayurveda" workshop, we will talk about the three bio-energetic forces (or doshas) that govern the outer universe and our inner universe.  Common energies existing both in nature and the human body are forces known as:  Vata (wind), Pitta (fire), Kapha (earth).  With the understanding of the dynamic relationship between our bodies and the environment, we increase our self-awareness, and become better equipped to realize our full human potential.  We will discuss practical tips to balance our daily routines, recognize how to adjust our seasonal routines, and discuss how to integrate Ayurvedic principles into our yoga asana practice.

The 1.5 hour workshop covers:

**The basic principles and philosophy of Ayurveda handed down by the sages of India.
**Exploring "dosha" or Ayurvedic mind body type.
**Using the doshas to better understand ourselves, partners and others.
**How life in the 21st century has the potential to unbalance all 3 doshas.
**Ayurvedic daily routines ~ why it makes sense to do a bit more than brush your teeth.
**Why massage is considered so essential in Ayurveda, and how to do daily self-massage.
**You are what you eat, balancing the 6 tastes, and the effects of food on the mind.
**Useful Ayurvedic herbs and spices that you may already have on your spice rack, and some home remedies for some common ailments.

Getting Your Zzz's:  How Yoga Helps with Insomnia

Sometimes we have difficulty falling asleep, sometimes we wake up and have trouble falling back asleep.  No need to count sheep:  there's a feedback loop between the muscles and the brain, and when we stretch the body and release tension, our brain relaxes too.  Come learn yoga techniques to help you release tension, feel placid, fall asleep.

All levels welcome.

About the teachers:

Dr. Manjula Paul is from Kerala, India - the homeland of Ayurveda.  Her family has practiced Ayurveda for three generations and they were royal Vaidyas (doctors) for the royal family of South India.  She studied Ayurvedic medicine for 8-1/2 years, and hold degrees BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) and M.D. (Master's Degree, Doctor of Medicine) in Ayurveda from the prestigious University of Kerala, India.  Before coming to USA she was an Ayurvedic chief medical officer in the Sitaram Ayurvedic Hospital and Pharmacy, in Kerala.  Dr. Paul has been practicing Ayurveda for 21 years.  Mrs. Paul is also a NY state licensed Esthetician and a registered Yoga teacher, (RYT) in ISHTA style (Integrated Science of Hatha, Thantra, and Ayurveda).  She now runs a successful Ayurvedic Center in Mamaroneck, NY, and also sees clients at Ishta Yoga Studio, Manhattan.  She lives in Westchester with her husband and son.At present Manjula is also studying Acupuncture in order to further understand other Eastern modalities in the art of healing.  To learn more, please visit her website www.soundshoreayurveda.com.

Marcela Clavijo, a Certified Junior Intermediate 1 Iyengar Teacher, has studied with the Iyengar Family in Pune and studies with Manuoso Manos and Patricia Walden. Since 1995, she has been listening to her teacher, Khenpo Pema Wangdak speak of matters that have become increasingly important to her. In 2003, she received novice ordination and instruction from Chokye Trichen Rinpoche in Nepal. She has done meditation retreats at Pema T'sal Monastery in Nepal and at Gampo Abbey in Nova Scotia. She is indescribably grateful to HH Dalai Lama and HH Sakya Trizin for their profound Root Teachings, and inspired by the example and instruction she has received from Venerables Robina Courtin, Tenzin Palmo, and Pema Chodron.

 

Alina Hernandez is a registered teach with Yoga Alliance (500 R.Y.T.). She has been teacher-certified by renowned instructor Rodney Yee, by Richard Rozen, contributing editor for Yoga Journal, and Jimamukti trained Colleen Saidmain. Alina’s training also includes work with Dr. Jamie Naughright, athletic trainer for professional athletes and dynamic anatomy teacher, as well as Anatomy workshops at the Iyengar Institute in NYC. She is featured on the covers of the Mayo Clinic and Gaiam integrated health videos.
